Abstract
Arthur St. Clair (23 Mar. 1737-31 Aug. 1818), politician and soldier, was born in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland. He emigrated to America where he received a commission as lieutenant during the French and Indian War and later as a major general in the American Revolution. The collection contains photocopies, copied from Dr. Amos Shaler's documents, 1995.

Background
Biographical / Historical
Arthur St. Clair (23 Mar. 1737-31 Aug. 1818), politician and soldier, was born in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland. He emigrated to America where he received a commission as lieutenant during the French and Indian War and later as a major general in the American Revolution. After the war he held several positions in Pennsylvania state government, then reluctantly accepted congressional appointment as the first governor of the Northwest Territory. Politically and financially bankrupt by 1802, St. Clair returned to his home The Hermitage, at Chestnut Ridge, Pa., in the Ligonier Valley where he died.
Scope and Contents
The collection contains photocopies of a 1-page typewritten biography of Arthur St. Clair with a photo of his portrait by Charles Willson Peale; 3-page handwritten family history; four drawings and a handwritten description of Rosslyn Castle, before 1700, the chief home of the St. Clair family in Scotland; 3-page handwritten biographical sketch of St. Clair written by William Egle, circa 1918, with a handwritten transcript, 1979; 3-page excerpts of obituaries and marriage of St. Clair's widow, children, and grandchildren; 1-page handwritten Thanksgiving Proklamation, 1788 signed by Arthur St. Clair's secretary; handwritten letter, Arthur St. Clair to his son, Arthur, 16 Nov. 1803; handwritten transcript of speech from chiefs of Ottawa towns to Europeans along Stoney Creek/Maumee River, 11 Aug. 1799; and a 14-page handwritten transcript of St. Clair's obituary from 1818, sent to Annie Lane, 2 May 1896, from her aunt.
